Calling all musicians!
You are invited to claim a spot on the festival stage for our 2nd Anniversary chapter celebration!

Groups small and large - with or without dancers are welcome. We will also have two open jam sessions during the day for general musical and dancing revelry.

To reserve a spot please email president@levantalsonora.com .
For full event details: www.levantalsonora.com

We also need volunteers to help with admissions, stage managing, lights, sound and workshop helpers. It takes a LOT more than just our 4 chapter board members to put on an event this size. Please consider donating an hour or two of your day to make this event a success.

Thanks,
Mahin

Hi Phoenix dancers and Middle Eastern Music lovers. I just joined Tribe and wanted to say hello. Some of you know me from my concerts and workshops in Phoenix last year. I'll be coming to Phoenix again on March 31st and April 1st with Souhail Kasper for workshops and a beautiful Hafla with live music and dancing.

If you ever wanted to learn how to sing an Arabic song or perform an Arabic melody on an instrument that you play, please come to one of my workshops. Souhail will also be doing a workshop on Rhythm and Movement especially for dancers in addition to his drumming workshops.

But, even if you can't make it to the workshops please come to the party on Saturday night to dance, listen and have a great time.

I want to get to know the Arizona dancers and musicians so please become my friend on Tribe, write to me, give me your ideas.

There's a place for us ...

When I started dancing, my very first public performance was at a Traveler show. Dancing to the live music was exhilarating and interacting with the audience was amazing!! It was dancing for the pure love of dancing. I had loved the dance for years but it was there that I fell in love with performing.

Part of my New Year's goals was to surround myself with positive energy and peaceful people. In line with that goal, I have an idea. What do you all think about setting up someting monthly - or at least quarterly - where we could get together and perform. Everyone ... no matter what style or experience level ... to live drums (wink wink drummer boys and girls) or to recorded music ... someplace "safe" and happy ... to support and encourage one another and to bond as performers.

I know I sound all hippie peace-lovin flower child-esque but ... well ... that's me LOL!

What do you think?

Phoenix Faerie Festival Merchant Vendors Apps Revised 10/25/06

Phx Faerie Festival Merchant App Revised

It was brought to our attention that the Merchant Vendor application was missing some crucial information and a bit difficult to fully understand.

So the application has been revised as of 10/25/06

Food vendors and Merchant vendor apps are now 2 seperate forms.

The Hand Craft only policy has been lifted to include other Retail merchandise which compliments the theme of the event. All merchandise whether hand crafted or retail must still be pre-approved by WGPFF jury staff.

All vendors must carry their own special event liability insurance, and must have an Arizona Privilege Tax ID.

So if you were put off by the complexity of the application previous to 10/25, or felt that your product wasn't appropriate, please take another look and consider being a part of the Phoenix Faerie Festival 2007.

If you have any questions, please ask us
MECDA Kick-Off Event Needs Help!

Hello all,

We have had organizational difficulties in getting our MECDA chapter started and are in need of much help to get things rolling. We had committed to a November 3rd Dance Show/Fashion Show but now find ourselves without the participation of two of our four officers to help steer this event.

We NEED lots of immediate help to keep this commitment to the local dance community and make our chapter a reality beyond its existence on MECDA Central's paperwork. We understand that everyone's lives are very busy but even a small amount of volunteering can help this go forward.

The event is Friday November 3rd 7:30 pm at Layali Restaurant - see my Tribe page for full details.

We do have some performers booked already but we may have room for more both -cabaret and tribal styles

We need:
Publicity Help
Vendors
Vendor Coordinator
Models for costume fashions
Helpers to dress the models and do makeup
Someone to run sound
An Emcee
Ticket takers
A large tent for models and performers to dress in ( there is not sufficient space inside the restaurant for that many people to prep)
Raffle donations / raffle coordinator

Please respond to myself or Tom Pettijohn ( tom.pettijohn@cox.net ) ASAP if you can help in even the smallest way. We realize we are almost reaching for a miracle here but we believe....

Thank you,

Mahin , Interim President
Tom Pettijohn, Interim Vice President

The Violet Wing A Go Go And Psychedelic Music Review

If you missed the first show you won't want to miss this one. The Wing plays many of the most popular songs from the late 60's. Tom Tuerff opens with folk songs by Bob Dylan, Donovan, The Beatles and some of his own material building the mood for the night. The first set by the Wing is dedicated to Rock and Roll with music by The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Kinks, The Troggs, Janis Joplin and The Who while the second set favors the more psychedelic music of The Doors, The Yardbyrds, Cream and The Jefferson Airplane. The Wing also plays some of the first garage punk music by The Music Machine. And as a tribute to the late Arthur Lee they will do My Little Red Book by Love. So don your tie dyes, bell bottoms, mini skirts and other hippy garb and join us for the Violet Wing experience. The lovely and unforgettable Violet Wing Go Go Dancers will be dancing to both of the Wing's sets.

So after the last Traveler show I was driving home on the 101 South. Just cruizin along, minding my own business ... when out of nowhere ... FLASH!! Stupid freakin photo radar got me!

I thought I might get off without a ticket because the car is registered in my husband's name but alas ... I did not. Today in the mail in all it's glory was a photo radar ticket with my name on it ... apparrently the car is registered to me as well.

Oh well ... to dance with Traveler ... it was worth it :o).

Souhail Kaspar will be here for Doumbek & Riqq workshops on Saturday, March 11th, a dancer's rhythm & movement workshop on Sunday, March 12th and a fabulous show on Sunday evening at Olive Branch.
He has put together a wonderful ensemble of musicians: Naser Musa on Oud, Majdi Kurd on additional percussion (all from California) and our own Ramzy on keyboards. If that wasn't enough - there's dancers too!
Please come out and support these events. The valley's bellydance scene can only grow if we continue to learn and be a welcoming spot for touring artists and instructors Without a supportive dancer/musician community we will find Phoenix is passed over by the best and brightest of the Middle Eastern entertainers and instructors. I hope to see many of you there.

Thanks!

THANK YOU - Open Dance Night in Chandler

I'd like to say thank you to all the fantastic musicians that came out to play for us last night Marceau, Dionisio and their crew did a fabulous job of providing music that made it hard to sit down! Abdou Abdullah on the oud was a wonderful addition to their ensemble.

Thank you also to our guest dancers: Rukshana, troupe Artemis under Gazelle's direction and wearing some of her beautiful costume creations, Makara with an impressive display of floorwork, and Zina who even in understated costuming exudes a dancer's soul with her graceful style. All of you had lovely performances, very enthusiastically received by the crowd.

Every seat was full, many were left to stand and more were turned away at the door because it was so full. Our musicians were in some tight quarters but were very gracious about it. I cannot thank you all enough for bringing your art and good energy to the evening. It would not have been half as much fun without you all! We hope to see you all again next month.... date and (larger) location to be announced!

I am a gitane fiddler new to Pennsic this year, and one night, while everyone was dancing and playing with fire, your CD was put on. (By golly, someone drug out a mini boombox!)

Needless to say, I was blown away! I have been studying violin since I was 4 and have been coveting music with the "gypsy" flair since before puberty. I like to think I have a discerning ear... and now I am off to purchase everything I can get my hands on!

Now I give you fair warning... someday I will hijack you all and make you play with me! Or at least keep you in jelly jars under my bed. *grin*

Dancers are more than welcome to come and dance. Aurora and Autumn were totaly awesome last time, thanks ladies! We also need pictures so if you have any that we can scan that would be great! Or you can bring a camera and take some band shots for possible use on the website. Or you can give me some candid shots of yourself...WAIT!...not you Ken...or Nick...man that was close.

Hope to see you there.

Great show tonight!

Who all made it to the show tonight (Feb 5) on Mill Ave?

Everything really clicked... the sound was good, the chemistry seemed excellent, and the crowds were great! We brought a few friends out so they could hear what we've been talking about, and we couldn't have asked for a better performance.

This was also the first time for us to hear Three Trees play with Traveler, and I like what I heard. The excellent drum duet with Edric during Turkish Malfouf was amazing, and his work with the bass really filled in many of the songs.

Everyone had a chance to shine tonight, even the audience sounded great when they started singing. Scott was amazing an ussual, Shawna did a good job on her guitar solo (didn't look like she expected that one!), and Edric blew everyone away with his drum work!
